These ping times indicate that this could be a good co-located data center for dedicated servers and private cloud for Houston businesses that are located n central Houston and that need to host applications that require high speed and low latency like online gaming, stock trading, or video streaming.

Alternative data center for your Houston business

OpenMetal’s dedicated servers and private clouds are hosted at a Digital Realty facility in downtown Los Angeles, CA, known for its green business practices and Tier III certification. Ping Times from Houston City to Los Angeles

The following shows the ping time from a centrally located looking glass in Houston, TX to the OpenMetal dedicated server data center location in Los Angeles, California. There were 5 packets of data transmitted with the following ping time statistics:

  • Minimum Ping Time: 36.733 ms
  • Average Ping Time: 36.790 ms
  • Maximum Ping Time: 36.853 ms

OpenMetal recommends ping times of less than 30 ms. Because the latency speed between Houston and OpenMetal’s Los Angeles data center is slightly above it, we would not suggest this as ideal choice for Houston colo needs.

How to know when a data center location is not a good choice

When evaluating a data center location, consider it unsuitable if:

  • Latency Tests: Results consistently exceed 30 milliseconds (ms), as recommended by OpenMetal for modern clouds and hosting needs.
  • Geographical Distance: Far from the primary user base, increasing delay.
  • Local Infrastructure: Lacks the capacity or quality needed for low-latency connections.
  • Connectivity Options: Limited or no direct connections to major internet backbones or networks.

OpenMetal’s data centers are located in Tier III facilities with connections to major internet backbones, so local infrastructure and connectivity options are never an issue. However, OpenMetal strongly recommends looking for a ping time of under 30 ms for modern applications. The latency tests from Houston to our Los Angeles facility is above 40 ms, so we would not recommend this data center location for Houston City colo and hosted IaaS needs.

OpenMetal’s Ashburn facility delivers low latency, with an observed 29.912 ms maximum ping time from central Houston. After adding an extra 5 ms for the last mile for less central locations, the maximum ping time is 34.912 ms, which just slightly above the recommended 30 ms threshold, ensuring fast speeds and minimal latency. Hence our Ashburn location is the recommended choice for Houston colo, bare metal, hosted applications and cloud services.
