The Hosted Private Cloud Large v4 is a three-node OpenStack and Ceph cluster built on the same Large v4 hardware available as a standalone bare metal server. Each node contributes dual Xeon Gold 6526Y processors, 512 GB DDR5-5200, and 12.8 TB of Micron 7500 MAX NVMe to a shared compute and storage pool. OpenMetal deploys the cluster in under 45 seconds using proprietary automation, handles Day 2 operations (monitoring, patching, incident response), and charges a fixed monthly rate with no per-hour billing, no VMware licensing, and no per-GB egress.
Key Takeaways
- Production-ready in under 45 seconds: OpenMetal’s proprietary automation deploys a fully configured three-node OpenStack + Ceph cluster in under 45 seconds. No manual provisioning, no multi-day setup.
- 96 cores / 192 threads across the cluster: Three nodes of dual Xeon Gold 6526Y at 2.8 GHz base provide dense VM scheduling capacity for multi-tenant SaaS, CI/CD pipelines, and large-scale virtualization.
- 1.5 TB aggregate DDR5-5200 memory: 512 GB per node supports high VM density, in-memory caching layers, and large OpenStack instance flavors without memory contention.
- 38.4 TB pooled Ceph NVMe storage: Micron 7500 MAX drives across three nodes form a distributed Ceph storage pool with built-in replication. No SAN, no external storage appliances.
- No VMware licensing costs: OpenStack and Ceph are open-source with zero licensing fees. Organizations migrating from VMware eliminate vSphere, vSAN, and vCenter licensing entirely.
- Day 2 operations included: OpenMetal monitors cluster health, handles patching, and provides incident response. Two support tiers: Base (included) covers hardware and cloud software delivery; Assisted Management adds named Account Engineer, 24/7 incident response, and proactive health checks.

What OpenMetal Manages (Day 2 Operations)
OpenMetal operates the Hosted Private Cloud as a managed infrastructure layer. The customer controls the cloud (OpenStack API, Horizon dashboard, VM lifecycle), while OpenMetal handles the platform underneath:
- Monitoring: Built-in Day 2 monitoring across all three nodes, covering hardware health, Ceph cluster status, and OpenStack service availability.
- Patching and upgrades: OpenMetal coordinates security patches and OpenStack version upgrades with minimal disruption to running workloads.
- Incident response: Base support covers hardware, provisioning, and cloud software delivery. Assisted Management (additional fee) adds a named Account Engineer, joint cloud health monitoring, 24/7 incident response, monthly proactive health checks, and assisted upgrades.
- Onboarding: Dedicated Account Manager, Account Engineer, and Executive Sponsor. Private Slack channel for engineer-to-engineer support. Optional weekly Google Meet check-ins. Migration planning for workloads moving from VMware, public cloud, or legacy infrastructure.
The customer retains full root-level access to the OpenStack control plane. OpenMetal does not restrict API access, instance flavors, network topology, or storage policies.
OpenStack API and Horizon Access
The Large v4 Hosted Private Cloud runs a full OpenStack deployment with API-first access. Manage compute, networking, and storage programmatically via the OpenStack API or through the Horizon web dashboard. Supported operations include:
- VM lifecycle (create, resize, migrate, snapshot)
- Live VM migration via Horizon for zero-downtime maintenance
- Neutron networking with VLANs and optional VXLAN overlays
- Security groups and floating IPs
- Custom instance flavors sized to your workload
- S3-compatible object storage via Ceph RADOSGW
No VMware licensing, no vSphere fees, no vCenter charges. Organizations migrating from VMware retain equivalent functionality through OpenStack’s compute, network, and storage APIs without per-socket or per-VM licensing costs.
Ceph Storage Architecture
The three-node cluster pools all Micron 7500 MAX NVMe drives into a distributed Ceph storage layer. Ceph provides:
- Block storage (RBD): Persistent volumes for VMs with configurable replication (default 3x across nodes). Each write is replicated across all three nodes for data durability.
- Object storage (RADOSGW): S3-compatible API for application-level object storage without external services.
- Self-healing: If a drive or node fails, Ceph automatically re-replicates data across remaining OSDs. No manual RAID rebuilds.
With 38.4 TB raw NVMe across three nodes and 3x replication, usable capacity is approximately 12.8 TB. The Micron 7500 MAX drives deliver 1.1M random read IOPS and sub-1ms QoS at 99.9999% per drive, providing consistent performance for Ceph OSD operations. Boot/data isolation on each node keeps Ceph OSD I/O off the OS drives.
For workloads requiring additional storage density, add Storage Large v4 nodes to the cluster (see Storage Server — Large v4).
Recommended Workloads on the Large v4 Hosted Private Cloud
Multi-tenant SaaS platforms
The 96-core / 1.5 TB cluster handles dense VM or container deployments for SaaS providers. OpenStack’s multi-tenant networking (project-level VLANs, security groups) provides network isolation, while Ceph’s replicated block storage ensures tenant data survives node failures. Live VM migration allows rolling maintenance without tenant downtime. RamNode achieved 16x VM density on OpenMetal v4 hardware with a 70% cost reduction.
Managed Kubernetes infrastructure
Deploy Kubernetes on top of OpenStack VMs or directly on the bare metal nodes via IPMI. The Large v4’s 64 threads per node handle dense pod scheduling, while Ceph RBD provides persistent volumes with automatic replication. OpenMetal’s private VLAN mesh delivers 20 Gbps per node for pod-to-pod east-west traffic. Compatible with Talos, Flatcar, K3s, and upstream Kubernetes.
CI/CD infrastructure
Run Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions runners, or Tekton pipelines across the cluster. The 38.4 TB NVMe pool handles artifact storage and build caching, while 96 cores support parallel build jobs. OpenStack API integration enables dynamic worker provisioning: spin up build VMs on demand and tear them down after each pipeline run.
Large-scale virtualization (VMware migration)
Replace VMware vSphere with OpenStack on equivalent or better hardware. The Large v4 cluster provides the same VM lifecycle management, live migration, and high availability without vSphere, vSAN, or vCenter licensing. OpenMetal’s onboarding team supports migration planning, and ramp pricing lets you run both environments simultaneously during the transition without paying double.
Data analytics and batch processing
Distributed Spark, Presto, or ClickHouse workloads across three nodes with 1.5 TB aggregate memory for in-memory shuffles. The 20 Gbps LACP mesh handles inter-node data exchange, and Ceph provides shared storage for input datasets and output results. AVX-512 on the 6526Y accelerates vectorized query execution in ClickHouse and columnar analytics.
