The OpenInfra Summit is a premier industry event that brings together developers, users, and administrators of open source infrastructure technologies. This year’s summit held in Vancouver in June 2023 featured presentations, workshops, and collaborative sessions, providing attendees with ample opportunities to engage with industry experts, expand their knowledge, and contribute to the open source community.
Booth and Sponsorship
OpenMetal also sponsored the OpenInfra event and had a booth to showcase its latest products and services, including a novel approach to deploying On-Demand OpenStack Cloud solutions.
Talks and Sessions
Session: Automating OpenStack with Terraform
Hands-on Workshop by Chris Bermudez, Director of DevOps Engineering
Session Details: With the nearly infinite ways to orchestrate your OpenStack infrastructure it can be tough to create the best practices to manage everything. In this workshop Chris covered the concepts of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) as well as how to apply it to your own small private cloud. Attendees were provided with an OpenMetal On-Demand Private Cloud to use at the workshop to get hands-on experience while OpenMetal Engineers walk them through the steps to automate their own infrastructure using Terraform.
Session: vGPUs with OpenStack Nova
Lightning Talk by Jacob Hipps, Principal Engineer
Session Details: This session on vGPUs with OpenStack Nova covered various use-cases and considerations for utilizing vGPUs effectively. OpenStack Nova is an open-source cloud computing platform that provides the foundation for building and managing virtual machines (VMs) in a cloud environment. It offers flexible and scalable VM provisioning, resource management, and access control, making it a fundamental component of the OpenStack ecosystem for cloud infrastructure.
This session covered example use-cases (and when not to use vGPUs), as well as specific hardware requirements, server and software configuration, and spinning up your first vGPU-enabled virtual machine
Overall, the educational session provided a comprehensive overview of vGPUs with OpenStack Nova, enabling participants to understand the use-cases, hardware requirements, configuration steps, and considerations involved in effectively utilizing vGPUs for various tasks.

Session: Value Driven OpenStack & Ceph Clouds
Lightning Talk by Yuriy Shyyan, Technical Product Owner
Session Details: In this talk, Yuriy delved into the challenges faced by growing businesses when it comes to cloud infrastructure costs and vendor dependency. While starting development in the public cloud is oftentimes logical, the escalating expenses and lack of flexibility become apparent as companies expand. The cost of idle resources and the impact on pricing goods or services creates a pressing need for alternative solutions, whether it’s for development, staging or production.
Yuriy presented OpenStack and Ceph as powerful tools for creating personalized cloud environments. By embracing these open-source technologies, businesses can leverage the same capabilities offered by public clouds, including VMs, Object Storage, Kubernetes, Load Balancers, shared file systems, and key/value stores and more. With OpenStack and Ceph, organizations can regain control over their infrastructure, extracting more value than they could otherwise at no cost.
By understanding the underlying technology and owning the resources of the entire cloud footprint, businesses can leverage excess capacity at no additional cost. Yuriy emphasized that access to expertise and assistance shouldn’t be limited to industry giants but should be available to all, leveling the playing field.
The session explored how OpenStack and Ceph clouds are effective solutions that empower businesses to escape vendor lock-in, reduce costs, and unlock the hidden potential of their own cloud environments. It discussed a safe landing footprint and a strategy for growth and scalability.
