We’re excited to announce a significant infrastructure upgrade that delivers immediate value to all OpenMetal customers: we’re doubling the included public bandwidth (egress) allowance across our entire hardware lineup, both bare metal and hosted private cloud configurations.

This enhancement means you get more network capacity at the same competitive price, furthering the cost advantage gap between OpenMetal’s private cloud infrastructure and traditional public cloud providers.

What’s Changing: New Bandwidth Allocations

All OpenMetal hardware tiers now include doubled public bandwidth allowances per server:

XXL, XL, and Large Series

  • Previous: 2Gbps public bandwidth
  • New: 4Gbps public bandwidth

Medium Series

  • Previous: 500Mbps public bandwidth
  • New: 1Gbps public bandwidth

Small Series

  • Previous: 200Mbps public bandwidth
  • New: 400Mbps public bandwidth

XS Series

  • Previous: 100Mbps public bandwidth
  • New: 200Mbps public bandwidth

These increases apply to all new and existing deployments. Private bandwidth for internal cluster communication remains at the same high-performance levels: 2Gbps for the XS tier and 20Gbps for all others.

Why This Matters for Your Infrastructure

Public bandwidth controls how much data flows between your cloud infrastructure and the outside world like your users, customers, API consumers, and external services. Doubling this allowance addresses several critical infrastructure needs:

Eliminating Bandwidth Constraints

Many applications that previously required careful bandwidth management or faced potential throttling during peak usage periods now have substantial headroom. A three-server Large V4 hosted private cloud deployment, for example, now includes 6Gbps of combined public bandwidth instead of 3Gbps.

Supporting High-Throughput Workloads

For organizations running content delivery systems, video streaming platforms, large file distribution services, or data-intensive APIs, the doubled bandwidth allocation means you can serve more concurrent users and handle larger data transfers without additional costs. This is particularly relevant for companies running commonly-banned workloads that public cloud providers restrict, such as email servers with dedicated IPs requiring high throughput for legitimate bulk sending.

Reducing Operational Overhead

With more generous included bandwidth, technical teams spend less time monitoring egress usage and implementing complex optimization strategies to stay within limits. You can focus on building and scaling your applications rather than managing bandwidth budgets.

Maintaining Cost Predictability

OpenMetal’s 95th percentile billing model already provides more predictable costs than per-GB charging, and the doubled allowances mean even more workloads will operate entirely within included bandwidth, resulting in zero additional egress charges.

Real-World Impact Across Use Cases

The bandwidth increase delivers tangible benefits across the diverse workloads OpenMetal customers run:

High-Traffic Web Applications and E-Commerce

E-commerce platforms running on our Large or XL hardware tiers can now handle significantly higher concurrent user loads during peak shopping periods, flash sales, or seasonal traffic spikes. The additional bandwidth ensures fast page loads, smooth checkout experiences, and reliable order processing even when traffic surges unexpectedly.

Content Delivery and Media Streaming

Organizations distributing video content, software downloads, or large media files benefit from the ability to serve more streams simultaneously. A Medium V4 cloud deployment that previously provided 1.5Gbps combined public bandwidth (500Mbps × 3 servers) now delivers 3Gbps, effectively doubling content delivery capacity at no additional cost.

API-Heavy Applications and Microservices

Applications with high API traffic volumes, whether serving mobile apps, third-party integrations, or IoT devices, now have substantially more bandwidth for request/response cycles. This is especially valuable for businesses operating SaaS platforms or providing data services to external consumers.

Big Data and Machine Learning Workflows

For organizations running big data analytics or machine learning pipelines that frequently transfer large datasets between cloud infrastructure and external systems, the doubled bandwidth accelerates data ingestion, model deployment, and results distribution.

Software Development and CI/CD Pipelines

Development teams benefit from faster Docker image pulls, faster package downloads, and quicker deployment of artifacts to production environments. For organizations running software development and testing environments on OpenMetal infrastructure, the bandwidth increase translates to faster iteration cycles and improved developer productivity.

Backup and Disaster Recovery

Organizations using OpenMetal for data backup and disaster recovery operations gain additional capacity for off-site replication and faster recovery procedures when bandwidth-intensive restoration operations are required.

How OpenMetal’s Egress Pricing Still Beats Public Cloud

Even before this bandwidth increase, OpenMetal’s egress pricing model represented a big cost advantage over hyperscaler public cloud providers. Now, with doubled allowances, the savings are even larger.

The Public Cloud Egress Problem

Major public cloud providers charge per-GB for egress, typically ranging from $0.04 to $0.12 per GB depending on volume and region. These costs accumulate quickly for bandwidth-intensive applications, often creating sticker shock when monthly bills arrive. A single terabyte of egress on major public clouds costs $60 or more, and costs escalate linearly as usage grows.

Worse, public cloud egress charges are completely decoupled from the compute resources you’re paying for. You’re essentially paying twice: once for the infrastructure to generate the traffic, and again to send it to your users.

OpenMetal’s Included Bandwidth Advantage

With OpenMetal’s model, substantial bandwidth is included with every hardware unit. Consider a three-server XXL V4 hosted private cloud:

  • New included bandwidth: 12Gbps combined public bandwidth (4Gbps per server)
  • Equivalent monthly transfer capacity: Approximately 3,900TB assuming typical traffic patterns (70% of traffic during 8-hour peak periods)

This bandwidth is included; no per-GB charges, no surprise bills, no complex cost optimization required.

Usage Beyond Included Allowances

For applications requiring bandwidth beyond the generous included allowances, OpenMetal uses 95th percentile billing with additional bandwidth available at $375 per Gbps (translates to about 180TB). This methodology measures your bandwidth usage at five-minute intervals throughout the month, discards the highest 5% of readings, and bills based on the 95th percentile measurement.

This approach provides two significant advantages:

  1. Burst tolerance: Temporary traffic spikes don’t inflate your costs, since the highest 5% of measurements are excluded
  2. Predictable pricing: You pay for sustained usage patterns rather than being penalized for every gigabyte transferred

Even when additional bandwidth charges do apply, the 95th percentile model typically results in costs 60-80% lower than equivalent per-GB pricing on public cloud platforms.

Taking Advantage of Your Increased Bandwidth

The doubled bandwidth allowance creates new opportunities for optimizing your infrastructure and expanding your capabilities:

Scale Existing Workloads

Applications that previously operated near bandwidth capacity can now handle growth without infrastructure changes. If you’ve been deferring feature launches, marketing campaigns, or expansion initiatives due to bandwidth concerns, those constraints are significantly reduced or eliminated.

Consolidate Infrastructure

Organizations running distributed infrastructure across multiple providers to manage bandwidth costs can now consolidate more workloads onto OpenMetal platforms, simplifying operations and reducing overall infrastructure complexity.

Deploy Bandwidth-Intensive Features

Features that were previously too bandwidth-intensive to justify like real-time collaboration tools, live video features, comprehensive logging and monitoring with external systems, or enhanced API capabilities, become more economically viable.

Improve User Experience

With less concern about bandwidth constraints, you can prioritize user experience improvements: higher-quality media, faster-loading assets, more responsive applications, and better API performance for mobile and third-party integrations.

Enable New Use Cases

The bandwidth increase opens doors for workloads that were previously impractical: operating as a secondary hosting provider for reseller customers, running CDN edge locations, hosting game servers with high player counts, or providing data-intensive services to external consumers.

Moving Forward with Enhanced Infrastructure

This bandwidth doubling reflects OpenMetal’s ongoing commitment to delivering superior infrastructure value. While hyperscaler cloud providers continue increasing fees and implementing complex pricing tiers, we’re focused on giving you more capacity, better performance, and greater cost predictability.

Your infrastructure should enable growth, not constrain it. With doubled bandwidth allowances across all hardware tiers, OpenMetal’s hosted private cloud and bare metal solutions provide the network capacity your applications need to scale efficiently.
