Bare Metal Networking

Dedicated. Redundant. Single-tenant.

Every OpenMetal bare metal server lands on a private network that is yours alone: 20 Gbps of included private bandwidth (upgradeable to 40 Gbps), VLANs no other customer touches, fair egress, and DDoS protection built in. It is the same fabric whether you run one dedicated server or a hundred.

How the Bare Metal Network Is Built

A redundant MLAG collapsed core, with every server dual-homed to two switches. No single device in the path is alone.

Bare Metal Network Architecture

Edge

Two edge routers form the internet border and full-mesh to the core below.

Core

A redundant core pair does the Layer 3 routing and holds the VRRP gateways.

Access

Paired, MLAG-bonded access switches are where your servers plug in.

Your server

Dual-homed by an LACP bond to two switches: 20 Gbps, upgradeable to 40.

Private Networking

Two 10 Gbps uplinks, LACP-bonded to 20 Gbps of included private bandwidth, upgradeable to 40 Gbps. The replication, clustering, and service-to-service calls that dominate a busy cluster stay on your private VLANs, never leave the fabric, and are never billed as egress.

  • 20 Gbps private connectivity included, upgradeable to 40 Gbps
  • VLANs specific to you, never shared between customers
  • Merge VLANs across your own clouds and bare metal clusters
  • Preconfigured to carry VxLAN traffic
  • Private traffic is included, not metered

Public Networking

A generous public egress allotment with fair 95th-percentile pricing above the set limit. No per-gigabyte premium that climbs with every request. For clusters, your egress is the aggregate across members.

  • Additional egress in 1 Gbps increments, or per our egress pricing
  • Burst up to 40 Gbps on egress
  • OpenMetal IP space or bring your own /24 or larger, announced from our Edge Routers
  • IPs connect directly to the public internet for maximum throughput

See the egress pricing calculator

Redundant by Design, Not as an Add-On

The network is an MLAG collapsed core with n+1 redundancy at every tier: edge routers, core routers, and access switches are all paired. The core pair presents a VRRP virtual gateway, so your default route is never tied to a single device.

That redundancy reaches the server. Because each server is dual-homed to two separate access switches, the loss of a single switch, router, or cable is a survivable event, not an outage. The bond keeps forwarding on the surviving path.

base network uptime SLA

Measured performance has run above 99.99% from 2022 through 2026.

Your Private Traffic Stays Off the Public Internet

A single bonded link is not a flat network. The fabric carries tagged (802.1q) VLANs that keep classes of traffic apart: a management and provisioning VLAN, routed VLANs for public internet-facing IP space, and private VLANs that stay Layer 2 only for your east-west and storage traffic. Your private traffic never shares a broadcast domain with your public-facing workload, and never takes the public internet path.

Why this Architecture Matters

Dedicated and Single-Tenant

n+1 at every tier and a bond to two switches at every server. Single-device failures are survivable, not outages.

Redundant by Default

n+1 at every tier and a bond to two switches at every server. Single-device failures are survivable, not outages.

Included, Not Metered

Private east-west is never billed as egress, and the public side is fair 95th-percentile pricing, not a per-gigabyte premium.

Built to Your Requirement

20 Gbps to 40 Gbps on the standard bond. Need more, or a multi-node profile? It is sized to your workload.

Built for Your Heaviest East-West Workloads

The private fabric is the thing to reason about when your servers talk to each other more than they talk to the internet.

Storage and Ceph clusters

Replication and rebalancing ride the private VLANs at 20 to 40 Gbps, off the public path and off the bill.

Databases and replicas

Keep primary-to-replica traffic on a private, redundant segment that survives a switch failure.

HPC and clustered compute

Tightly coupled nodes get distributed, dual-homed connectivity sized to the cluster.

Private cloud on the same fabric

Run a hosted private cloud on top, or attach bare metal to one, over the same private VLANs.

DDoS Protection

DDoS protection is included, up to 10 Gbps per IP, so a volumetric attack on a public address does not become your outage.

Remote Management

Every server is IPMI-enabled for out-of-band management, so you can reach the box even when the primary path is down.

Get Started With OpenMetal Bare Metal

Map your east-west profile or a multi-node cluster onto the private fabric before you build, so the bandwidth tier is right the first time. Pre-configured tiers ship with fast delivery from stock, and proof of concept credits are available for migrations and new projects.

Bare Metal Networking FAQs

Are my VLANs shared with other customers?

No. Our hardware network carries each customer’s traffic on VLANs specific to them, and no VLANs are shared between customers. You can elect to merge your VLANs across your own clouds and bare metal clusters.

How much private bandwidth is included, and can I get more?

Every server includes 20 Gbps of private bandwidth (two 10 Gbps uplinks, LACP-bonded), upgradeable to 40 Gbps. For a heavier or multi-node requirement, the right tier is sized to your workload.

How does egress billing work?

Internal traffic between your own nodes stays on the private VLANs and is not billed as egress. Only traffic that exits to the public internet counts, against a generous included allotment, with fair 95th-percentile pricing above the limit. The egress pricing calculator has the specifics.

Is the network redundant?

Yes. It is an MLAG collapsed core with n+1 redundancy at every tier, and every server is dual-homed to two access switches, so a single switch, router, or link failure does not drop the connection. The base network uptime SLA is 99.96%, and measured performance has run above 99.99% from 2022 through 2026.

Can bare metal share networking with my private cloud?

Yes. With integrated bare metal, bare metal nodes ride the same private fabric as your hosted private cloud.

Is DDoS protection included?

Yes, up to 10 Gbps per IP.
