InMotion Hosting Builds Better OpenStack Deployments with the Institute for Cyber Security
Since July 2020, InMotion Hosting’s Flex Metal Cloud team has worked closely with OpenStack administrators and architects at the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Institute for Cyber Security (ICS). The two teams met during the 2020 OpenStack OpenDev virtual event for OpenStack developers and administrators.
At the time, both teams were working on deploying OpenStack in a rapid, repeatable, consistent fashion to provide OpenStack private clouds for end users. The Flex Metal Cloud team shared their strong expertise in bare metal hardware management and deploying OpenStack using the Kolla-Ansible OpenStack deployment project. The ICS team in return provided excellent feedback and experience in operating OpenStack private clouds in production to meet the needs of their student researchers.

Partnership with ICS
The partnership has grown from this initial collaboration into a regular and fruitful exchange of ideas, knowledge, and tools to help both teams deliver OpenStack more quickly and more successfully to end-users.
The Flex Metal Cloud team has learned much from the ICS team about using GPUs to accelerate OpenStack workloads, the challenges they have faced meeting the unique and unexpected needs of a malware farm, and the kinds of workloads they support for their educational customers.
Solving Challenges with OpenStack Private Clouds
The Flex Metal Cloud team has also had the distinct pleasure of supporting the ICS team with their troubleshooting and in-depth research into issues impacting their deployment automation, introducing the ICS team to tools that can help validate and test their OpenStack deployments, and submit code and documentation to help them solve challenges with their OpenStack private clouds.
