AWS Alternatives

OpenMetal offers AWS alternatives that can reduce AWS costs and help you grow your business.

Compare AWS and OpenMetal Costs

When considering AWS alternatives to reduce cloud costs, it is valuable to look at comparative pricing with different considerations. To evaluate OpenMetal Cloud Cores costs vs AWS, choose a methodology below that is most relevant to you.

We have made every attempt to compare AWS bundles that are equivalent to OpenMetal Cloud Cores and to match any costs based factors such as geographic hosting locations. Please remember that all costs are estimates.

OpenMetal as an alternative cloud provider to AWS is not an apples to apples comparison. OpenMetal is a single-tenant, hosted private cloud model that works like a public cloud. But it does not share resources with other users. AWS is a traditional multi-tenant, public cloud model that does share resources with others.

Evaluating AWS Alternatives Based On Budgets

Another way to evaluate AWS alternatives with OpenMetal Cloud Cores is to understand the estimated number of VM resources that would be available within set cloud budgets.

The following tables show the OpenMetal Cloud Core bundles and corresponding AWS options affordable within a specified cloud budget. These include the number VMs that would be available for each to demonstrate the value of your cloud investment with OpenMetal vs AWS. Costs are based on a 3-year reserved resource pricing.

Evaluating AWS Alternatives Based On Use Cases

A third way to look at AWS Alternatives is to walk through a use case scenario to better understand how your organization might support workloads. The following example is based on a real customer engagement. This software provider was using paying for individual Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs) on AWS to host their industry specific ERP platform. Each individual VPC supports the following resources.

AWS Cloud Deployment for Individual VPC

AWS Cloud DeploymentvCPUsRAMStorageMonthly Cost
App Server: EC2/Linux 2 16128 GB500 GB$244/Month
SQL Server on Windows 16128 GB2 TB$244/Month
Total Storage2.5 TB $575/Month
Estimated Bandwidth (5TB)$450/Month
Total Monthly Cost (1 VPC)   $1512/Month

^All prices are base estimates on 3 year terms and may be subject to change because of pricing adjustments and/or unique resources used by different customers. Pricing obtained April 2023.

The AWS deployment above supported one customer. The software provider was paying $1,500 per month, per customer, to host their ERP platform. As their customer base grew, they knew that needed to find a more cost-effective way to take advantage of economies of scale to find cost savings and increase their own profitability.

OpenMetal Reduces Individual VPC Costs

Right from the start, OpenMetal Cloud Cores provide a cluster of three bare metal servers with full utilization of allocated resources. This affords more VPCs for the cloud spend. Additionally, the larger the Cloud Core selected, the more VPCs that are available to significantly reduce individual VPC costs (as shown below).

OpenMetal Cloud CoresvCPUsRAMStorageMonthly CostVPCs AvailableCost per VPC
Standard Cloud Core264339 GB3.2 TB$961/Month2$480/Month
Large Cloud Core1,4161.5 TB6.4 TB$2495/Month5$416/Month
XL Cloud Core2,9523.07 TB12.8 TB $4335/Month12$361/Month

As you can see above, having full utilization of the bare metal allocations allows for significantly reduced per VPC costs. For this software provider, it became advantageous  to see what these savings per VPC might add up to with several customers.
