Q: How much storage does the OpenMetal Storage Medium v4 provide?
The Storage Medium v4 provides 120 TB of raw HDD capacity (six 20 TB SATA drives) plus 12.8 TB of NVMe cache (two 6.4 TB Micron 7500 MAX drives), with room to expand to 240 TB HDD and 25.6 TB NVMe in the same chassis.
The server uses a three-tier storage architecture. Two 960 GB boot SSDs in RAID 1 handle OS operations, keeping system I/O isolated from data workloads. The NVMe cache tier serves as Ceph BlueStore WAL/DB and hot-data cache, delivering 1.1 million random read IOPS per drive with 70 microsecond typical latency. The HDD bulk tier provides high-capacity storage for cold and warm data, Ceph OSD operations, and sequential I/O workloads.
The chassis supports up to 12 HDD bays and 4 NVMe bays. With 6 HDDs and 2 NVMe drives installed, 6 HDD bays and 2 NVMe bays remain open. Populating all bays brings the server to the same configuration as the Storage Large v4 (240 TB HDD + 25.6 TB NVMe) without migrating data to a different server.
In a 3-node Ceph cluster with default 3x replication, the Storage Medium v4 contributes approximately 40 TB of usable HDD capacity per node (120 TB raw / 3). All nodes connect over the 20 Gbps LACP private mesh for Ceph replication and recovery traffic.
