Q: Can I expand an OpenMetal Storage Medium v4 to the Storage Large v4 configuration?
Yes. The Storage Medium v4 and Storage Large v4 share the same chassis with identical drive bay layouts, so populating the open bays upgrades a Medium to the full Large configuration without data migration or server replacement.
The Storage Medium v4 ships with 6 of 12 HDD bays and 2 of 4 NVMe bays populated. Adding six more 20 TB SATA HDDs brings the HDD tier from 120 TB to 240 TB. Adding two more 6.4 TB Micron 7500 MAX NVMe drives brings the cache tier from 12.8 TB to 25.6 TB. The boot tier (two 960 GB SSDs in RAID 1) remains unchanged. After expansion, the server matches the Storage Large v4 specification exactly.
In a running Ceph cluster, new drives are added as additional OSDs. Ceph automatically rebalances data across the expanded drive pool without downtime. The NVMe cache expansion increases WAL/DB and hot-tier capacity, improving write absorption and metadata performance for the enlarged HDD pool.
Contact OpenMetal to schedule drive additions on a deployed Storage Medium v4. Expansion does not require server downtime for the drive installation itself, though Ceph rebalancing will generate temporary additional I/O on the private mesh during data redistribution.
