Rafael Ramos

Director, Software Engineering

From the beginning, Rafael has possessed an inherent desire to create and build. Rafael’s original dream was to be an architect so that he could design and build homes with his father, who was a contractor.

Rafael’s first job was even as a carpenter’s helper, resulting in multiple DIY build projects…and multiple construction messes around his family home.

But, ultimately, Rafael thought that computers were just way more interesting. One of the earliest examples of this was when Rafael disassembled his family computer to see how it worked…but also to discover how to put it all back together.

Rafael even attempted to work as a Personal Trainer for a few years. But the move to tech was unavoidable as Rafael found himself writing software to track and record client workouts. It was clear that software development was his greatest opportunity to use his creativity and build great tools.

After studying Computer Engineering at Old Dominion University, Rafael joined InMotion Hosting (the parent company for OpenMetal) where he quickly learned to wear multiple hats to adapt to different customer and organizational needs.

One of these new experiences was exposure to use of open source tools. In fact, his first contributions to open source came while working for the BoldGrid brand as part of a suite of open source plugins and themes for WordPress.

Today, Rafael’s desire to create and build has come full circle. As the Director of Software Engineering, he drives the build and execution of the critical systems and applications deployed on the OpenMetal platform. With each deployment, Rafael finds personal satisfaction in knowing that his work is not only helping OpenMetal customers with their service, but also their clients’ service as well.
